As the air cools through the evening and into night and the fog covers warming Lake Michigan, we turn our attention to the slowdown and a transition to fall.
Families are the first to travel south for the start of football, volleyball, soccer and various other sports and academic activities. Even locally, families become busy and the crowds sauntering around Downtown Petoskey begin to thin offering an enchanted two-week period of summer weather without the throngs. Businesses begin sales, restaurants have a few open tables, and even the local parks have room to roam.
The line out the door at Roast & Toast works its way inside. The patios at Chandler’s, The Backlot, and Beards award visitors with venues to stretch out and move elbows. The Grain Train has groceries and produce to pick from. The Perry Hotel has a few open rooms, and lo and behold, there are a few extra parking spaces in front of your favorite shop.
The view across Little Traverse Bay begins a slow fade to softer green foliage, and the higher up the hills one gazes, red, orange and yellow, spark the timidity of shorter days and lingering evenings. Clouds waltz in from the horizon standing taller and covering large expanses of azure below where sailboats set spinnakers as broad paint strokes.
Amid this transition, there’s time for a deep inhalation and a long exhalation reminding us to realize another summer is passing and returning to candles and fireplaces isn’t such a bad proposition. Summer’s swath of activity oftentimes leaves us breathless, thus a chance to breathe arrives as a favorable pleasantry.
Yet, Petoskey’s not totally without festival. Music abounds, Crooked Tree Art Center continues with their impressionist exhibit, the McLean & Eakin Booksellers parade authors to and froe, and the Petoskey District Library offers a full range of activity for all ages.
Transition times during the year are signals of rejuvenation. Downtown Petoskey is no different. A chance to slow brings a chance to catch-up and take longer to wave and welcome our visitors. Enjoy August and enjoy a summer respite.
