Downtown Petoskey: Design Central, Part Deux

Lake Street Design

November 8, 2017

In our continuing look at Downtown Petoskey’s world of designers and design shops for home and business, we peek at some familiar faces.

For over twenty years, Renee Guthrie, at Lake Street Design, has been designing and making customers happy.

“I listen to the homeowner’s likes and dislikes, or if it’s a new build, what they want to see or don’t want to see, and I create what’s right for them and their space,” says Renee.

But she doesn’t stop there, because she wants the design process to be a good experience for the client.

“We have the sources, the vendors, and trades people to make it a fun experience.”

The shop is at 404 East Lake Street and hours are from 10 – 5, Monday through Saturday, or by appointment.

Across the street at Ciao Bella, 409 East Lake Street, owner and designer, Dianne Bell, can not only help you find a pillow, but can work with you to actually find a contractor to re-build or build a new house. The design shop also houses a retail floor with accoutrement at the ready.

“Diane does it all!” exclaims Suzie sitting in the downstairs design studio. “We lay out this entire table with fabrics, pictures, ideas, whatever is called for. Right now, we’re working on a home in Naples, Florida and one in Alexandria, Virginia.”

For 30 years, Diane, has been designing richly interesting interiors for anyone’s lifestyle.

Also located in Downtown Petoskey is Kitchens by Design owned and operated by Jill Brecheisen. The studio sits at 214 Petoskey Street where, as Jill states: “Inspiration starts here!”

She goes on to say how much she “loves” working with builders especially for “second homes located up-north.”

Her cozy confines allow you to sit and meld with Jill as she brainstorms and creates before your eyes.

Another spot in downtown, known more for decorating, is Reid Furniture, over at 307 East Mitchell Street.

“We technically do design, but in reality, it’s more decorating. We do free in-home design, working with the homeowners to match style, colors, artwork, and even furniture choices,” Karen Symonds points out. She also makes mention of the enormous entourage of accessories her store carries. “On purpose, we carry a lot of things people can come in and pick up on the retail side of the business.”

“Besides, we’ve been in this same location for 90 years, and have been owned by 4 generations of the same family.”

 I would say that’s a pretty good track-record.

Speaking of unique, Downtown Petoskey is a very unique center for design and decorating professionals. The older homes, the newer homes, and the specialty residences of our surrounding tourist and resort population all require an experienced eye when it comes to making sure design and decorum fit within the stunning landscapes of Little Traverse Bay. So, enjoy the views, and remember, they’re by design.
