Thanks, and Giving

Lake Street around Thanksgiving

November 22, 2017

All through Downtown Petoskey there are signs of the season popping up. From decorated lampposts and storefronts to the Santa Parade and the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Pennsylvania Park this weekend, vestiges of the Holidays take shape. But one elusive gesture remains intangible. That is the thanks we have for our community.

Petoskey Thanksgiving Parade

In this time of Thanksgiving, let us rejoice in the flavor and the personality that is Downtown Petoskey. We are a community of people with ever-changing emotions, thoughts, and beliefs, yet we remain together as one to effectively create a warm and welcoming neighborhood.

From each end of Mitchell Street, every corner of Lake Street, the alleys where the staff walk to work, up and down Division, Howard and Petoskey, through the views of Bay Street and the far reaches of Michigan Street, the civic pride is palpable. We take an interest in the aesthetics, always, but we also make sure if people are meandering aimlessly to take a minute and point them in the right direction. If a piece of paper lies abandoned on the sidewalk, it’s an easy reach to the trashcan for us. Each business assists the other if necessary. Each resident, business owner, or staff cordially invites questions and answers the curious about our history and quaint quirkiness.

There are the privileged and the underprivileged within our boundaries yet all are provided for. Food pantries and available hot meals are a block away from upscale restaurants and clothing stores. Our art center and library offer a place for the public to rest and rejuvenate without a cost of entry while having the ability to enculturate an impoverished mind.

Downtown Petoskey is the best of all worlds surrounded by a Great Lake and great citizens. Let us give Thanks and Give of ourselves to ensure the community we have created prospers for one and all. Look at where we live? I dare you to find better.

Thank you.
