The morning after the 4th of July brings a peace and tranquility fueled by the previous night of food, drink, and fireworks. In Downtown Petoskey, that equates to a lonely bench in Pennsylvania Park for quiet contemplation, and if you’re lucky, some early morning people watching.
The action begins early as folks dash to their stations behind cook lines and counters of restaurants and coffee shops. Roast & Toast, Julienne Tomatoes, North Perk, Dripworks and Symons General Store are some of the places scurrying for the next expected arrivals into their midst. Beans are ground, eggs whipped and pastries placed while the aromas ooze through screen doors and beckon anyone walking by.
And then the town awakens. People begin to find early morning parking. Bikes are straddled into the racks. There are even a few runners stretching and walking after a jaunt around the bay. All soon find themselves sampling those pastries and sipping the hot coffee. It’s part of Americana one finds in the shaded tracks of town still waiving its bunting and displays of patriotism.
A few yawns dot the affects of those who may have spent a few extra hours enjoying the 4th, but return they do. A restorative morning signals four more available days of celebration this week before many return to work and places beyond Petoskey.
The summer is at its peak with many weeks on the ascent for more vacationers to revel in the fun. And as the fun winds down, there’s always a bench to rest. Enjoy and relax. Just make sure to remember you can slow down, unplug and unwire yourself because the town harkens you to look up and gaze into its personality.
