With warm regards to Mike and the Palette Bistro on Bay Street, I’m sitting at an upstairs table sipping a local favorite, a Beards Brewery Grizzly Adams IPA, and looking out at Little Traverse Bay on a beautiful, bright, blue spring day.
From this vantage point, one can gaze across the waterfront softball field, the playground, and over the break wall into the vast horizon of Lake Michigan.
Open space abounds this time of year. Many of our local inhabitants extrapolate themselves from the North and head to Southern environs once the curtain of ski season closes and Easter awaits quietly backstage.
For visitors, this open space translates into ample parking, unencumbered seating at a favorite watering hole or eatery, and best of all, peace. Hotel rooms are open. Temperatures outside allow for some fishing, walks along the waterfront, and unique vistas of ice flows on the bay from downtown Petoskey highlight that transition of seasons many take for granted.
We in Petoskey love this time of year. Wherever you walk downtown, there are kind hello’s and “how-have-you-been’s.” There are hugs and handshakes as we ply the memories of snow and ice from the synapses. The sun warms our skin and sunglasses become a reality.
If it’s tranquility you’re after, let me give you a hint: Everybody went South and I guarantee there are long lines at Disney World. Join us North and watch the progression of spring before the cacophony of summer.
By the way, the view from the Palette Bistro with a Beards IPA in hand? Priceless.
