Warmth arrives in many fashions in Downtown Petoskey. Whether the first day of spring hovers in the 50’s or 60’s is often irrelevant. True warm feelings and the verifiable warm attitudes blossomed at the hour of 6:49 a.m. on March 20, 2017. During such time, goldfinches returned to backyard feeders, tufted titmice joined them, and chickadees welcomed both back home.
Later in the day, shoppers cavorted down Lake Street in and out of stores looking for spring bargains as smiles broadened and steps slowed. Change was in the air and everyone and everything aspired to soak it in.
Walking the railroad tracks through Pennsylvania Park under the once dormant maples and oaks, one could anticipate the yearly Spring Open House, the Art Shows, Craft Shows and countless other events happening within a square mile radius.
Meyer Hardware placed new displays of their venerable Polish Pottery. Crooked Tree Arts Center exhibited juried photography contestants. Roast & Toast began to set their outside tables for hearty souls looking for any possibility of sunshine. Palette Bistro cleaned windows so views of the bay harkened to diners perched at their tables. The Perry Hotel shined silverware and polished glasses anxiously awaiting the Easter Brunch.
The staff at Grain Train organic grocery readied shelves for seasonal changes where locals and visitors can always find the best of our region for quick snacks on the boat or gourmet meals at the cottage. Clothing stores scattered throughout downtown made sure their window models portrayed fun and sun waiting just around the corner in May.
Wherever you ventured, the electricity was palpable. The view of Little Traverse Bay brought visions of sloops, cruisers, and fishing regattas bobbing up and down nudging the sides of their slips and tugging at ropes for an escape to the open waters of Lake Michigan.
Best of all, the town awaits you. In all its glory, Petoskey stands at the ready for a spring adventure culminating in a summer soiree you’ll never forget. Welcome to the beginning of the best year of your life.
