New Business November and Random Snow

Populace Coffee Petoskey Michigan

Sitting with Andrew Heppner, owner of “Populace” at 207 Howard Street, I’m struck by his comfort; his fit into Downtown Petoskey.

“We wanted to be Up North,” he notes, “so, when Dripworks wanted to sell, we preserved the infrastructure upon purchase and maintained the baking operation along with the principles of quality.”

Andrew and wife Justis have been in Bay City roasting coffee for ten years. They also own a café there along with one in Downtown Detroit.

“This Petoskey café is cozy; the coffee is what we roast ourselves – in Bay City, but our coffee, nonetheless,” Andrew shares. “We offer a unique coffee experience.”

The shop offers house made baked goods made fresh at the café, assorted coffee drinks, and a small tabled atmosphere of warmth and extraordinary service.

“We do free coffee days, teacher appreciation days, many different special days for special groups of people,” says Andrew.

The days are random and can be followed on social media or by letting Populace place you on their email newsletter service.

Speaking of random, how about this snow!? With vestiges of 2014, rumor has it that local ski resorts will open sooner than later. In fact, reservations at local eateries are continuing to rise right into Thanksgiving in hopes that a four-day holiday culminates in early winter fun, er, ah, like, late fall fun, maybe? Yes, come and enjoy winter in November.

The annual Ladies Opening Night was on Friday, November 15th, an early start to the Holiday shopping season, and if tickets are still available, the Holiday Swirl at Crooked Tree Arts Center is Thursday, November 21st. So why wait till January for a winter visit? Bring the skis, snowshoes, and shopping bags, and there’s one more new business to visit:

“Bloom”. Off the Pennsylvania Park sidewalk at 220 Park Avenue between The Perry and American Spoon, Bloom’s windows will grab you for a saunter into their shop. Weddings and events are their specialty, so be prepared to be wowed. Filled with pleasantries for events, house, and garden, the eclectic mix among displays is wonderfully staged for a warm, comfortable browse. Best of all, parking is directly across the green space at the Elks city lot.

Back to the snow for a moment and a traffic report. The road construction in Downtown Petoskey is done! So even if snow prevails from now until late May, at least smooth surfaces can be counted on.

Thanks to all of you for your patronage, your loyalty, and enjoyment of Downtown Petoskey. Happy Thanksgiving.
