Downtown Petoskey

The gazebo in Downtown Petoskey Park

August 2, 2017

This blog is dedicated to everyone who does everything to make sure Downtown Petoskey always looks fabulous.

From my various perches around town, which literally stretch end to end in all directions, I watch in amazement the City of Petoskey employees mow lawns, trim trees, prim flowers, prune bushes, and pick up litter.

Each time I see the young folk with their extended trash pincers picking up the smallest piece of paper or cigarette butt, I thank them. When I can, I offer them refreshment. What I dearly hope is that all people say, “thank you.” They are out in the early mornings, they are out late at night after the bars close, and they work through rain, sleet and snow to make sure Downtown Petoskey is impeccably dressed.

Then there is the staff at the Downtown Management Board. They fling themselves into the breeches of events and make sure the “behind the scenes” works behind the scenes. The staff is minimal and spends many an hour making sure you think there is a multitude of people parading around distilling perfection when in reality there is but a meager few.

The downtown merchants band together and collectively make sure Downtown Petoskey continues to live up to its image. The magazine, TV and radio coverage grow every year, and the downtown merchants work with the Downtown Management Board to ensure every visitor has a chance to enjoy our environs. From Petoskey Rock’s, movies in the park, Where’s Waldo, and any other festival you may choose, it’s a team effort.

Please take note of the Petoskey emblems on uniforms. Take time to walk by the downtown offices on Pennsylvania Park. Say hello to the merchants as they sweep their sidewalks. Say thanks to the few that provide amazing visits to the many.

Downtown Petoskey is not the prototypical Great Lakes coastal city, and we all make sure it’s unique, so as you progress through your visit, take note of the beauty, the serenity, and the work behind the scenes. Any expression of gratitude is always welcome.
