*Non-Sponsored Meters:

  • Street meters are enforced Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on regular days.
  • But on major holidays, those meters go dark — meaning you don’t need to pay or worry about coins or the meter expiring.
  • This applies to many on-street meters, though be sure to check signs: many have a 3-hour limit even when paid service is in effect.

Why This Matters for Holiday Shoppers and Visitors:

  1. Encourages Shopping Local
Free holiday parking makes it easier and more affordable for people to come downtown, enjoy local shops, restaurants, and holiday events — without the stress of feeding a meter.
  2. Boosts Parking Turnover
On busy shopping days, it helps more folks find convenient spots because people aren’t “topping off” meters endlessly — turnover is encouraged when there are time limits in place.
  3. Supports Festive Events
Downtown Petoskey Businesses hosts various in-store events—and free meter parking makes it more welcoming for families to stroll the streets, sip cocoa, and enjoy holiday windows.

A Few Tips for Holiday Parking in Petoskey:

  • Double-Check Signage: Make sure you are parking at designated FREE Holiday Meter. For non-sponsored meters, always glance at the parking signs when you park. Some meters have time limits or special restrictions.
  • Know the Major Holiday Definition: The city parking materials indicate free parking on all major holidays, but it’s smart to check the calendar or downtown parking website if you’re unsure.
  • Be Mindful of Winter Parking Rules: In winter, overnight parking restrictions apply. Specifically, on-street overnight parking (December 1 – April 1) is not allowed on many downtown streets.
  • Use Off-Street Lots if Needed: If Street Parking is tight, downtown Petoskey has several parking lots (Elks, Petrie, Park Garden, etc.). The Elks Lot, for example, is free on major holidays. The parking lots are not included with our Holiday Meter Parking promotion.
  • Visit our Parking Services site for more information.

Why Free Holiday Parking Is a Great Seasonal Gift:

Free holiday metered parking might seem like a small perk, but it’s a thoughtful gesture that benefits both residents and visitors. It lowers the barrier for people to come downtown, spend time in local shops, and soak up the holiday ambiance — while also helping maintain a good flow of visitors and parking options.
