Downtown on a Summer Day in August

Summer in Petoskey

August 16, 2017

The streets are quieter this morning. As the moon is on the wane so to is the energy of the summer.

People meander to and fro with coffee cups, shopping bags, and kids in tow. There are benches that are empty and those that are full. A few water dishes for our furry friends are in front of some shops and there are even a few treats about.

What’s actually miraculous is the lack of cellphones in the hands of people. At least for today, the folks I spy have let go. They’ve unwound.

Little Traverse Bay in August

Each day in the summer brings many different crowds for a diversity of events: Art in the Park, Summer Open House, Petoskey Rocks, etc. This past weekend we even had a triathlon weaving its way around sidewalks and parking meters, but today there are wanderers. No real purpose. No real hurry. A relaxing walk amongst an otherwise hectic lifestyle can be had. The cool breezes from Lake Michigan, the calming view of the surf gently lapping at the shore, a bobbing boat with no real need to anchor all bring pause toward a serenity and tranquility that Downtown Petoskey offers.

With that being said, this weekend ushers in Festival on the Bay. While a short walk out of downtown, the streets, coffee shops, restaurants and watering holes will be packed in town.

So, while you can, enjoy your stroll. Enjoy your disconnected mind for yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is yet to be, so today is the best day of your life.
