The Peace of January

Peace of January in Petoskey Michigan

Happy New Year! But more importantly, peace. The Holidays have passed, the streets have quieted, and the credit cards are back in the wallet.

There’s always a distinct end to the rampant energy that befalls the Holidays in Downtown Petoskey. First, you can slice your way on the sidewalk without dodging all the humanity – trust me, the shops like the humanity; however, for the average person wanting to ramble aimlessly, the room to wander is nice.

Second, there are suddenly parking spaces galore. When the shopping crush is at its height, parking is not.

Third, seats at the local watering holes are abundant. There’s shoulder room and quiet conversation about quiet things. You can chat with Doug at Chandler’s and hear every word.

Fourth, there are less people on less cellphones. This is a bias, but the amount of people who are continually on their phones in public places always adds to an already loud energy.

Fifth, there are no lines outside Roast & Toast.

Sixth, the Downtown Events committee can take a breath after a busy Fall and Winter.

Seventh, Center City Gym is packed with New Year’s Resolutions – many gone by February.

Finally, if you haven’t guessed, this is a great time to be in Downtown Petoskey. You can have the run of the place and can take your time while you do it. I hate giving away local secrets, but that is my job.

So, enjoy the peace of January. Enjoy the slow times. Enjoy the rejuvenation of the spirit. Enjoy Downtown Petoskey.
